Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
The Golden Temple of the Sacred Tooth houses Sri Lanka’s most revered Buddhist relic – the tooth of Lord Buddha. During puja ceremonies (ritual offerings and prayers), a highly secured chamber containing the sacred tooth is opened to devotees and visitors. The tooth itself is not visible directly; it is kept inside a golden casket shaped like a stupa, which, in turn, holds six smaller stupa-shaped caskets.
Beyond the main temple, the complex features numerous smaller shrines, temples, and exhibition halls. Independent guides are available around the site for approximately Rs 600, while complimentary audio guides can be picked up at the ticket counter. An elevator is provided for those who may find the steps challenging.
The temple grounds can become crowded, attracting locals, tourists, Chinese tour groups, and visiting Thai monks. Visitors are expected to dress modestly, covering legs and feet, and to remove their shoes before entering sacred areas.
