Kandy Lake
At the heart of the charming city of Kandy lies a serene lake, perfect for a leisurely walk. Strolling along its shores, pausing at the lakeside benches, is a peaceful way to enjoy a few hours in the city.
The area around the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is particularly pleasant for a walk. If you’re planning what to see in Kandy, this spot should be at the top of your list.
Kandy Lake is a man-made creation, constructed in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinha, the last monarch of the Kandy Kingdom. The island at its center was once the king’s private harem. During the British colonial period, the island was repurposed to store guns and ammunition, and a fortress-like wall was built around it. On the southern shore, in front of Malwatte Maha Vihara, you can see the circular structure that once served as a bathing place for monks. Today, the lake remains one of the most popular and scenic attractions in Kandy.
