Minneriya National Park

Minneriya National Park, located in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province near Habarana, is renowned for its spectacular wildlife, particularly the massive gatherings of elephants during the dry season. The park is part of the country’s Cultural Triangle, making it easily accessible from attractions like Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Polonnaruwa.

Best Time to Visit:

The peak period is August to September, when hundreds of elephants converge around the Minneriya Tank, creating one of the largest wild elephant gatherings in the world. However, the park offers wildlife viewing year-round.

• Leopards and wild buffalo

Safaris are conducted in open-top jeeps, with private tours highly recommended for a better experience. Half-day trips typically last 3–4 hours, available in morning (sunrise) or late afternoon slots. The central attraction is the Minneriya Tank, a massive ancient reservoir where wildlife gathers.

• Park Hours: Approximately 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM (last entry at 5:00 PM)
• What to Bring: Sun hat, sunscreen, camera, plenty of water, and a dust mask if needed
• Rules: Do not smoke, litter, feed animals, or leave the jeep
• Payment: LKR is preferred at the park gate; USD may be accepted by tour operators

Minneriya National Park is most famous for “The Gathering”, when potentially the largest wild elephant assembly on Earth can be seen. The event has been featured by National Geographic as one of the world’s top natural wonders.
