Parrot Rock Mirissa

Parrot Rock Mirissa is considered one of the must-see attractions in Mirissa, Sri Lanka, thanks to its unique location and breathtaking ocean views. This small rocky outcrop sits just a short distance—less than 50 feet—from the shoreline, positioned on the left side of Mirissa Beach when facing the sea. Despite its close proximity to the beach, it offers a peaceful escape and a panoramic perspective of the coastline.

Reaching Parrot Rock is quick and straightforward once you arrive at Mirissa Beach. The rock formation is clearly visible offshore near the beach entrance. To get there, visitors need to wade through shallow seawater, which can rise to waist level depending on tides and conditions. Expect to get wet during the crossing. Upon reaching the rock, a set of steps leads you up to the top, where sweeping views of Mirissa Beach and the famous Coconut Tree Hill unfold before you.

The most rewarding times to visit Parrot Rock Mirissa are early in the morning or during sunset. Sunrise is especially peaceful, with very few people around, making it an ideal time for quiet reflection or photography. Since sunrise in Sri Lanka occurs around 6:00 a.m., arriving by 5:30 a.m. is recommended. Sunset, while equally beautiful, tends to draw larger crowds.

Before heading over, it’s wise to prepare properly. Wearing swimwear and bringing a waterproof bag will make the water crossing easier. If you don’t have a bag, you may need to hold your belongings above your head while crossing. At the summit, there’s a small grassy area where you can relax or enjoy a simple picnic. Aside from soaking in the scenery, there aren’t many activities, but the calm atmosphere makes it perfect for escaping the hustle of the beach, especially in the early morning or later in the evening.

The views from Parrot Rock are stunning and make it a fantastic spot for photography. If you’re visiting Mirissa, this viewpoint shouldn’t be missed. While nearby, consider also visiting Coconut Tree Hill, located just a 10-minute walk away. Both highlights can easily be explored in a single day.
