Explore the Dambulla Cave Temple

The Dambulla Cave Temple stands as the most iconic landmark in the city and is a must-see for anyone visiting the area. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it contains the most well-preserved system of cave temples in Sri Lanka.

The site features around 80 documented caves, though visitors mainly explore five principal ones. These chambers showcase an impressive collection of ancient murals and statues illustrating the life and teachings of the Buddha. Altogether, the paintings cover roughly 2,100 square meters. The temple complex is also regarded as one of the highlights of Sri Lanka’s renowned Cultural Triangle.
