Wasgamuwa National Park, located in the Matale and Polonnaruwa districts of Sri Lanka, is a haven for wildlife and ancient heritage. Declared a national park in 1984 to protect its rich biodiversity, it is especially famous for its population of sloth bears, giving its name from the Sinhala “Walas Gamuwa,” meaning “bear forest.”

Covering over 39,000 hectares, the park lies between the Mahaweli River in the east and Amban Ganga in the west. Its highest point, Sudu Kanda, reaches 470 meters. Situated in Sri Lanka’s dry zone, it receives rainfall mainly from the Northeast monsoon between October and January. The park’s vegetation consists of tropical dry mixed evergreen forests, including trees like Weera (Drypetessepiaria), Palu (Manikkarahexandra), Ehala (Cassia fistula), Burutha (Chloroxylon swietenia), and the endemic Kaluwara (Ebony).

Wildlife
Wasgamuwa is home to 23 species of mammals, including herds of around 150 elephants, sloth bears, and the marsh elephant subspecies (Elephas maximus vil aliya). Other mammals include purple-faced langurs, toque macaques, wild boars, spotted deer, water buffaloes, and the elusive Sri Lankan leopard. Reptiles such as crocodiles and pythons are also present.

Birds
The park is recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) with 143 species recorded, including 8 endemics like the red-faced malkoha and Sri Lankan junglefowl. Other notable birds include yellow-fronted barbets, peafowls, painted storks, Eurasian spoonbills, and the rare Sri Lankan frogmouth.

Historical Sites
Wasgamuwa also holds historical significance, with the Buduruwayaya ruins, featuring a reclining Buddha statue from the 2nd century AD, and ancient irrigation tanks and canals scattered throughout the park.

Safari Experience
Safari tours offer the best way to explore the park’s diverse wildlife and scenic beauty. Being less crowded than other parks, visitors have a higher chance of spotting elephants, bears, and other wildlife in their natural habitat.
