Minneriya National Park, located in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province about 190 km from Colombo, is a top wildlife destination and one of the country’s 70 Important Bird Areas. The park protects the catchment of the Minneriya Tank, built in the 3rd century AD by King Mahasen.

Its most famous attraction is The Gathering, a spectacular event during the dry season (July to September) when hundreds of wild elephants—sometimes up to 700—assemble at the reservoir, socializing and bathing.
