National Museum of Kandy
Among the exhibits is a replica of the 1815 document that transferred control of the Kandyan provinces to British rule. The agreement cites a significant reason for this transition: the harshness and injustices of the Malabar ruler.
Sri Wickrama Rajasinha was deemed to have consistently failed in fulfilling the most sacred and essential responsibilities of a king. Consequently, he was deposed, and the Kandyan provinces were placed under the authority of the British Empire.
The museum, together with four devales (temples dedicated to deities) and two monasteries—but notably excluding the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic—forms part of one of Sri Lanka’s renowned cultural triangle sites. It remains a must-visit destination in Kandy.
