This half-day safari offers a wonderful opportunity to explore Udawalawe National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s premier locations for observing wild Asian elephants. A resident herd of more than 250 elephants lives in the park year-round, supported by plentiful water sources that allow it to sustain large populations. Each year, many additional elephants migrate to Udawalawe from surrounding protected regions as well.
The park itself was established to provide a habitat for elephants displaced by the creation of the nearby Udawalawe reservoir. In addition to its thriving elephant population, Udawalawe is also recognized as a vital bird-watching destination, home to a rich variety of species—including waterbirds, raptors, and numerous terrestrial birds. Morning safaris are especially popular among bird enthusiasts, as they often offer sightings of rare and uncommon species.
